PROJECT IDEAS
There are lots of ways of celebrating Global Youth Service Day. Here are a few project ideas. In addition, we would love to hear from your organization about model programs and projects that you are doing to involve youth in community service and development projects. Education
  • Coordinate computer and internet workshops.
  • Organize awareness forums on important regional issues such as sexual health, eradicating poverty and hunger, sustainable development, etc.
  • Provide screenings for HIV/AIDS in conjunction with information on prevention.
  • Set up a one-day or ongoing tutoring program in local schools.
  • Organize a dialogue of neighborhood youths on issues such as religious and cultural conflict in the area.
Neighborhood Enhancement
  • Organize a food or clothing drive for local shelters and schools
  • Paint a mural to brighten up the neighborhood.
  • Arrange a sports tournament with a theme to raise awareness for youth volunteerism and local issues.
  • Collect educational tools and supplies to donate to local disadvantaged schools.
  • Coordinate a blood drive with a local hospital or clinic.
  • Help neighbors paint and repair their homes.
  • Clean up a vacant lot.
  • Organize a campaign to raise money to purchase and install playground equipment in an area park.
  • Campaign for lighting along poorly lighted streets.
  • Offer to help a senior citizen with chores or groceries.
Environment
  • Clean up neighborhood streets, parks and beaches.
  • Implement a recycling drive for the surrounding area to reduce pollution and garbage.
  • Plant trees and flowers in public parks.
  • Adopt an acre of a rainforest.
  • Clean up trash along a river or in a park.
  • Create a habitat for wildlife.
  • Create a campaign to encourage biking and walking.
  • Organize a neighborhood group to plant, tend and harvest a vegetable garden.
Politics and Government
  • Conduct a debate or forum in connection with local government officials concerning an issue affecting your community.
  • Campaign against issues facing the community such as HIV/AIDS prevention.
  • Plan a fundraiser for local organizations, schools or shelters.
  • Create a forum to educate citizens on local, national and international government, including the processes and roles of the UN and NGOs.
  • Identify a local issue you are concerned about and contact someone in local government with your ideas on what to do about it.
  • Organize a public issues forum for your neighborhood.
